The kidneys are paired organs that lie posterior to the abdomen, in the area of the lower back. They serve the body as a natural filter of the blood, and remove wastes which are diverted to the urinary bladder. Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of a kidney. This can be done thru `open surgery` or thru laparoscopic surgery.
Indications for nephrectomy:
- Tumors of kidney
- Non-functioning kidney
- Long standing infections in kidney (Chronic pyelonephritis)
- Reno vascular hypertension
- Nephrosclerosis
- Symptomatic patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
- Re?ux or obstructive nephropathy
- Multicystic dysplastic kidney
Procedure:
The Laparoscopic Nephrectomy surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. A laparoscope (thin tube with an attached camera and light source) is inserted through incisions (single or multiple) in the body. Surgical Instruments are passed through the laparoscope and the kidney is removed.
